A large proportion of amputees experience phantom pain at some time, which may substantially affect their everyday life. The pain is usually described as “stabbing” and occurring without warning.

The medical field has usually preferred the use of pain medication to treat this problem, however this can result in substantial side effects. There is usually no guarantee of long-term and/or durable success in the majority of these cases. Alternative treatment therapies, such as magnetic field or biofeedback therapy, also do not offer long term relief from pain.
